There are two Play modes in Numbots, Story Mode and Challenge Mode:

Story mode is based around consolidating understanding.

Challenge modes is about speedy recall of facts.

Challenge Mode is locked for new users and is unlocked once players reach a certain level on Story Mode.

There are 20 Challenge levels and only the first is unlocked to begin with. To unlock the next Challenge, players must correctly answer 20 questions in a minute.

I understand this can be challenging for some children (in terms of typing speed) so will be passing this feedback onto the developers.
