Our whole school approach to language teaching and learning is in line with the recommendations of the National Curriculum and the requirements outlined in the Department for Education Languages Programme of Study for Key Stage 2.

 

The National Curriculum for languages aims to ensure that all pupils:

 

  • Understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources
  • Speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
  • Can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt
  • Discover and develop an appreciation of a range of authentic writing in the language studied.

 

Our Modern Foreign Language curriculum at Marton is rooted in our school vision. 
Sow - staff sow the seeds of language acquisition by introducing basic vocabulary and fundamental language structures. This involves engaging and interactive activities that capture the children's interest, such as language games, sings and simple conversations. The aim is to instil a curiosity and eagerness to explore the French language. 
Nurture - we foster a supportive and encouraging environment for language growth. Staff can create a classroom environment that embraces mistakes as part of the learning process and encourages children to express themselves in French without fear of judgement. Providing additional resources like books, multimedia and cultural materials nurtures a well-rounded understanding of the language. Individualized attention and positive reinforcement also play a crucial role in nurturing each child's linguistic development.
Grow - expanding language skills beyond basic proficiency. Staff can incorporate more complex language structures, cultural lessons and collaborative activities. Projects or themed days that integrate language learning skills with other subjects contribute to a holistic growth. Children should develop a cultural awareness, fostering a comprehensive understanding of the French language and its significance.
