School Governors

Governors play a key role in a school’s long term strategic development.

There are three core functions to be responsible for, which governors undertake:

  • Clarity of vision, ethos, strategic direction and meeting statutory duties
  • Holding the school to account for the performance of both the pupils and the staff
  • Overseeing the financial performance of the school ensuring that value for money is achieved and that Pupil Premium monies are used effectively having a measurable impact for the pupils concerned
  • In addition, in a Voluntary Aided school the governors are responsible for the admissions and are the employer of the staff

Our Governing Body is composed of 12 individuals from diverse backgrounds where each has been appointed or elected by different stakeholders within the school. Having recently reconstituted our Governing Body is made up of:

  • 7 Foundation governors who are appointed by Chester Diocesan Board of Education in consultation with the PCCs of the various parishes in our catchment area, however the incumbent of Marton is ex officio
  • 2 parent governors elected by parents
  • A staff governor elected by the staff
  • The Head Teacher
  • 1 Local Authority appointed

Each governor’s term of office is for four years.

The Full Governing Body meets termly with the subcommittees meeting on the whole half termly.

The majority of the work of the Governing Body is undertaken by the committees. We have a Standards committee which focuses on the educational standards across the whole school – we don’t just look at KS2 SATS results. All pupils’ progress is important to us and to that end we have established subject link governors who work closely with subject leaders and a dedicated data governor who understands the progress and attainment of each cohort in depth. The Management committee covers buildings, finance and HR matters. As we are a Church of England school we also have a Foundation committee which undertakes the issues around the teaching of RE in school, worship and similar matters. Other committees are formed on a more “need to act” principle from those available with the appropriate skill set e.g. HTPM, Admissions etc.

Together with the Head Teacher and Senior Leadership Team, a School Development Plan (SDP) is drawn up by the governors and is used to move the school forward. It is a fluid plan which is regularly updated to reflect the current position.

Following the recent Ofsted judgement we have formed an Action Group which meets on a regular basis to focus in more detail on the Action Plan which had been drawn up by SMT in response to the comments.

To carry out the role of a governor effectively and efficiently training must be undertaken to ensure that we are as up to date as possible and have all the skills necessary to carry out our function. A skills audit is carried out on a regular basis to identify any skills gap.

  • And several others
